Breaking political news before the news

Cooper’s Internet Support Swoons

July 3rd, 2012

Yesterday morning through journalist Andrew Sullivan and his column in The Daily Beast CNN’s Anderson Cooper officially came out as gay saying, “The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” While only a few grandmothers in Ohio were actually unaware of this, the “announcement,” it had a huge effect through social media. Anderson Cooper was trending almost the entire day on Twitter with mostly positive and gushing support for the newsman. Our Votertide data shows an amazing spike for him. Cooper gained over thirty thousand new Twitter followers yesterday alone and five hundred new Facebook fans! In contrast, Cooper usually picks up between two to three thousand new Twitter followers per day and between fifty to one hundred new Facebook fans per day. Even though it is much more common today to be openly gay, there still looks to be a desire for many people to support and share in those announcements by becoming a fan and messaging to the person.

I am one of those who had no idea he was gay. I have just always had tremendous respect for him…was rooting for a “Kelly & Cooper Show”. My opinion of him has changed…I admire and respect him more! I also think he is handsome and tremendously sexy, but alas, I was born 40 years too early and now realize my chances are even slimmer,,,but I’ve still got a crush on Anderson Cooper…there, now I’m out!
